Rohan looked restless since morning. I had witnessed him all these years from the calm and fun loving next door chap to this sombre edgy one. Relationships can really change people from who they are. I always preferred him to be the prior, his jokes would be rib tickling and his smartness impressive.
I stood right there near his study as he smoked his 15th and put off the cigarette butt in the bin. His last novel had not done too well and there were no distributors for his new one. He scribbled something umpteenth time and threw the crumpled paper ball again in the bin.
He pushed himself back on the armchair and looked blankly at the slow rotating fan. I wasn’t sure if he was thinking of his failed career or his failed relationship.
Oh yes, Rohan fell for Ananya 3 years back. Ananya’s charm was a perfect match to Rohan’s intelligence. They clicked like the two hands meet at the strike of midnight clock. Relation was quicker than 2 minute noodles and they decided to marry. I was a witness to the romance like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee till the bitterness started appearing just in a year. The differences were stark, conversations turned to curt responses and fights were just a step away.
Finally he gathered the courage to pen the failed relationship on paper with the finesse of a good author. I saw it to be a hard wrenching suicide note from a failed and dejected human. He kept the paper neatly tucked under his recent novel.
The evening was mundane with no talk till dinner where Ananya picked morsels distastefully and Rohan kept swapping channels. Way past midnight while I was lazily waiting for dawn I heard a loud gun shot from the bedroom. The neighbours gathered in shock but I had preempted it seeing the suicide note earlier that evening. When the clamour settled Ananya was taken away by the police for postmortem and I saw Rohan give a sly smile under his fake tears for a plan well executed. I sat there on his study where he tirelessly tried to copy Ananya’s signature on the property papers before writing the suicide note. I was somewhere a part of the plan as he set an alarm on me for 1 am for the kill.
